The South African Consortium of Air Quality Monitoring (SACAQM) team, recently featured by the Canadian International Development Research Centre (IDRC), is revolutionizing air-quality monitoring in Gauteng province. Supported by the IDRC and the AI4PEP initiative, SACAQM has partnered with fibre network operator Evotel to install 120 additional AI-powered monitors in 2025, adding to the 30 already operational since 2023. Developed in South Africa at just USD100 each, these cost-effective devices provide real-time pollution data, addressing severe health challenges tied to urbanization and industrialization. SACAQM underscored the importance of accessible environmental data, while Evotel CEO Albert Oosthuysen highlighted the initiative’s role in creating a healthier, more sustainable future. Plans are in place to expand the network across South Africa.
