The Jet Set Breakfast radio show recently hosted Professor Bruce Mellado—senior scientist at the National Research Foundation, Temba Labs Research Professor at the University of the Witwatersrand, and Director of the Institute for Collider Particle Physics—to reflect on the lessons learned five years after the onset of COVID-19.

Prof. Mellado emphasized the initial lack of preparedness globally, noting that scientists had to rapidly shift focus to support national efforts. He highlighted the importance of establishing regulatory frameworks for data sharing and collaboration to enhance future pandemic responses.

He also discussed the need for developing early detection systems utilizing artificial intelligence and machine learning to proactively identify potential outbreaks. He concluded by advocating for continued investment in data infrastructure, collaboration, and AI-driven tools to better prepare for future health crises.
