The South African Consortium of Air Quality Monitoring Ai_r device is an innovative system that uses artificial intelligence to fight air pollution in Johannesburg. The University of the Witwatersrand-led team, headed by Professor Bruce Mellado, uses cost-effective sensors with IoT technology. This remarkable project aspires to deploy tens of thousands of $ 100 each sensor units nationwide, collecting air quality data that is analysed continuously using AI models to provide advanced predictions of pollution events, weather impacts on air quality, and other factors critical for environmental decision-making.
From mitigating air pollution to fighting climate change, AI is fast emerging as a critical tool across the continent. AI-powered satellite analytics have become important in reforestation projects in Madagascar, which has increased the survival rates of seedlings in degraded baobab forests. Similarly, AI models enhance weather predictions and early warning systems in Africa's most vulnerable regions, where extreme weather threatens livelihoods. African Decisions has featured the SACAQM project, highlighting its role in transforming environmental management in South Africa. To read the full story see the link below.
